What are the visa requirements for study in the UK?

When you come to the UK you will need a visa to enter the country. The type of visa you will need depends on how long you would like to study.

  • If you are studying for less than 6 months, you need to get a Student Visitor Visa. You can have a Student Visitor Visa for up to 24 weeks of study. You do not need to show proof of English level.
  • If you are studying for more than 6 months, you need to get a General Student Visa. You will need this visa if you plan to study in England for more than 24 weeks.

You may be aware that the UK Borders Agency (UKBA) has changed the criteria for issuing student visas from 31 March 2009

All UK based English language schools now have to receive evidence from the students (or their agents) that the students have at least an elementary level of English before entering the UK. This is because they will no longer grant entry visas to students who have a beginner level of English.

UKBA's documentation states that one of the following items may be acceptable as proof of level:

  • a secondary school attendance record or leaving certificate which states that the student has attended English language classes for 3 / 4 or 5 years
  • a secondary school examination certificate stating some form of English language achievement
  • a certificate of having attended evening classes in English college
  • university certificate showing he / she has attended an English language course
  • an internationally recognised certificate in English (e.g IELTS/ FCE etc)
  • a reference from an appropriately qualified person to state that the student has previously studied English. The reference should detail the course, the dates, any level achieved and the referee's contact details.

This process will now be applicable for all students from outside the EU who require a UK entry visa and all English UK accredited schools have to comply with this ruling.
